Work done is equivalent to energy, which is a scalar quantity.
Since all forms of energy are interchangeable (law of conservation of energy), you wouldn't have the physical situations like amount of heat in a certain direction, or the amount of electrical energy spent in a month in the vertical or horizontal direction etc.
