The simplest form of thermistor thermometer is to pass a known current through the thermistor (which is a piece of semiconductor material). The current is recorded by a galvanometer.

When the temperature changes, the conductivity of the thermistor changes (the higher the temperature, the higher the conductivity because of more charge carriers are present). The change of conductivity will be recorded in the galvanometer as an increase or decrease of current.

With suitable calibration, the current recorded in the galvanometer can give an indication of the temperature of the thermistor.
