Hay varias maneras de decirlo. La que más se acerca a tu frase es: "Friendship is such a precious thing that you should keep it and look after it". Como en sentido metafórico tu frase compara la amistad con una planta, una flor o un jardín, también podría traducirse asÍ: "Friendship is like planting a garden, it takes patience and devotion to see it grow and bloom". Friendship needs care and at the same time cultivate it....Es una de las formas como mejor se puede decir, porque muchas frases no se pueden traducir como mismo las escribes del español al ingles.
