Oracle has been the industry leader in serious database applications for the past twenty or so years. One of the biggest advantages of Oracle is its multiplatform availability, which easily accomodates distributed databases.
Multiplatform also means enterprises are free to choose the most efficient processor and servers in the market, as well as adapting to existing hardware.

On the software side, Oracle's version of SQL has been the norme of the industry, and where compatibility and reliability is important, it has its advantages.

The SQL server from Microsoft has been marketed very actively lately, and it has many advantages in terms of stability and scalability. The multiple redunduncy permits assurance of data in a transparent way.

My SQL is generally used in a lesser scale in the web environment. It is an excellent platform for small scale databases. Both Oracle and MySQL can be downloaded on the PC platform for free, and run perfectly on desktops and laptops. This latter consideration is important for education and learning purposes.

To learn SQL, it is recommended to have at least a basic course, or a very good book with some help from friends or good forums.
