In Europe and the US industry and free trade brought about a rise in the economy whereas China began a 200 year decline.

In the 21st Century China has finally made a return to the world’s forefront. Today, according to the current exchange rate calculations, China’s GNP at factor cost already ranks fourth in the world, preceded only by the US, Japan and Germany. And according to calculations of purchasing power, China ranks only second. Under the premise that the west may soon be surpassed by China many western countries have obviously made the same old mistakes that the fifth emperor of the Qing dynasty, Qianlong, once made.
