In the past, I thought that communication is (唔知用is定was) equal to talking. Employees talk (用present tense 定past tense) to their managers or colleagues simply by talking.

In the past, I thought that.....,這句話以後,所有時式都要用過去式,或者過去完成式;除非,之後所講的事情是永恆不變的定理。
In the past, I thought that communication WAS equal to(或者用equalled to,因為equal 其實是可以用作動詞) talking.
”employees talked to ......”,但要記得equal to talking之後不要用full stop,要用comma;若是另外的想法,則這句少了一些時間性的容形詞,如nowadays, now或者其他,所以很難說用甚麼時式。
Employees talk(應該不用talk 而是communicate,這才產生句子意思) to their managers or colleagues simply by talking.
Employees commnicated to their managers or colleagues simply by talking then.

You might as well say in this way :
I used to believe that communication simply meant talking with people, such as that ( the communication ) within a ( large ) organization.
After all these years, I now realize ( find / learn ) that ...........( go on with your essay )....
Hope this might help.
