to lessen/weaken/soften something. 減輕, 削弱某事(物)的效果.
e.g. We had a drink of hot chocolate to take the edge off the cold weather.

字面上的意思take the edge off = 把尖銳處拿掉 ／磨平大略是說講話不要太尖酸刻薄啦!
