crude oil contains a lot of long-chain alkanes, which undergoe catalytic cracking to form alkenes.
also, paraffin contains alkanes, which are cracked to form alkenes.
for propan-1-ol, it is dehydrated through hot catalyst, forming propene. propene is an alkene, and the following reactions are known!

Why X can be propan-1-ol?
It is because Alkanol can be oxidized to Aldehyde(R-CHO) and than to Carboxylic Acid(R-COOH)
Therefore KMnO4 will be decolourized
