其實以眼還眼，以牙還牙是來自聖經；最先的出處是出埃及記２１章２４，２５節

那段經文是「以眼還眼，以牙還牙，以手還手，以腳還腳，以烙還烙，以傷還傷，以打還打。」
”eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”

後來在馬太福音裏耶穌基督再引用猶太人的說話，說：
「你們聽見有話說：『以眼還眼，以牙還牙。』只是我告訴你們，不要與惡人作對。有人打你的右臉，連左臉也轉過來由他打；有人想要告你，要拿你的裏衣，連外衣也由他拿去；有人強逼你走一里路，你就同他走二里；」
