Josiah Royce (1855-1916). Filósofo norte-americano, de origem judia, n. em Grass Valley, Califórnia. Graduou-se primeiramente em engenharia na Universidade de Califórnia. Passou à Alemanha, onde frequentou nos anos de 1875 e 1876 as universidades de Leipzig e Goettingen. Lecionou de 1876 a 1878 na recém fundada Universidade de John Hopkins, ali se doutorando em 1878.
