這兩句究子的[ Be ]是當作[ verb -動詞用]
Be的意思解作[ 是 ]
因為一句完整句子裡,必須要有[ noun 名詞][ verb 動詞 ]才
成為完整句子.
例: I am a boy. I 是名詞,am 是動詞
I go to schoo in the morning.I 是名詞,go是動詞
Yes,I am. I 是名詞,am 是動詞
No, he is not. he 是名詞,is是動詞

Our old flat was (be)small.
解作-我們間舊屋是很細的.


There were (be) only two bedrooms
解作-那裡是只有兩間睡房.

in the first sentence, "be" (was) means "是".
e.g. I am (be) 12 years old.
in the second sentence, "be" (were) means "有".
e.g. there are (be) 5 students in the classroom. (do not say "there has 5 students in the classroom". this is a very common mistake made by Chinese.)

"be" are both verbs in these sentences and this is why they can be used past tense. as part tense was used, both sentences are talking about sth happened in the past which we believe that they are no longer true.
