LIVING BEYOND OUR MEANS

Every one of us relies on nature and its
delicately balanced ecosystems to provide the
conditions for a decent, healthy, and secure life.
Yet, our careless exploitation of the Earth’s
resources is threatening many of the ecosystems
on which we depend so heavily, Over-cultivation
of land, uncontrolled deforestation, an overtaxed
water supply, and the widespread destruction of
other species are just some of the ways that
humans are damaging the planet. In a nutshell,
the human race is living beyond its means. On a
global scale, the situation is analogous to using a
credit card foolishly. If one constantly spends
with a “live now, pay later” mentality and no
regard for the future or how the debts will be
repaid, the outcome will be disastrous.
The seriousness of the environmental
problem is highlighted in the Millennium
Ecosystem Assessment report, sponsored by the
United Nations. Based on the findings of 1,360
scientists in 95 countries, the study contains
what its authors call a “stark warning” for the
whole world. Nearly two-thirds of the
mechanisms that support life on Earth are being
used unsustainably, and natural habitats that
recycle air, water, and nutrients for all living
creatures are being irretrievably damaged. In
effect, we are threatening the survival of our own
species, as well as that of the other 10 million
species on the planet. The report says: “Human
activity is putting such a strain on the natural
functions of the Earth that the ability of the
planet’s ecosystems to sustain future generations
can no longer be taken for granted.”

Despite this gloomy forecast, we have the
power to reverse the situation by radically
changing the way we treat our natural assets.

This requires collective action to promote
sustainable development, which means using
natural resources to meet the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs.

Achieving such development, however, is an enormous challenge
involving all levels of society. Unfortunately,
progress so far has been painfully slow,
primarily because governments and institutions
worldwide have been unwilling to take decisive
action..

Even so, it’s not too late-but time is
running out. The warning signs are there of us all
to see. The future is in our hands.

My topic is ------- 以上可以自行交換使用收尾 That's all for my presentation. 或者That's all for today.     最後加上Thank you for your attention. 要注意的地方: 發音很重要, 還有 the + 母音時, the的發音不同, 要注意技巧: 你如果懂中文意思,你應該就會知道何時語調要有變化例如“Only by valuing all our precious natural and human resources can we hope to build a  sustainable future.”-Kofi Anan,只有當我們珍惜...., 顯然只有必須加強,所以 only語調要提高Every one of us relies on nature and its delicately balanced ecosystems to provide the conditions for a decent, healthy, and secure life.(1) "of us" 要連音,方能展現自己的流暢度(2) decent, healthy and secure life, 也需要跟著標點符合,有逗點時,要停頓Yet, our careless exploitation of the Earth’sresources is threatening many of the ecosystemson which we depend so heavily, Over-cultivationof land, uncontrolled deforestation, an overtaxedwater supply, and the widespread destruction ofother species are just some of the ways thathumans are damaging the planet. (1)Yet, "然而", 表示以下內容和前面不同,語氣當然也要提高強調,來告知你的觀眾(2) our careless exploiration 一邊講,一邊有責罵別人個感覺, 罵別人怎麼這麼不小心啊, 所以careless這個字講的時候要重,而且要慢一點(3) threatening 威脅別人的時候,當然語調會不相同, 所以同樣的,這個字要慢慢唸,語調也要重(4) heaveily 也要強調(5) Over-cultivation of land, uncontrolled deforestation, an overtaxed water supply, and the widespread destruction ofother species 這些都是在指出人類的錯誤,所以必須強調,但不可每個字都強調所以基本上在形容詞的部分可以加強,也就是在over, uncontrolled, overtaxed, widespread 等字都必須唸仔細且大聲以下就依此類推嘍朗讀其實很容易,自己懂得文章,帶入情感,你自然就懂得哪些地方需要有比較激烈的表達嘍Good luck!!!
