Well, I dont think so. The "creation" of 關公 is not just for incentive or self-purpose and the aim is that people want to respect this hero.

You hv such opinion may be due to bias, and it seemd that the gods of greece may be very different from yr point of view.

Chinese have their own way of distinguishing gods. Chinese tend to turn legendary figures into gods because Chinese think these legendary figures are strong and powerful and can bring them good fortune ($).

In the western civilization, however; they see religion slightly different than Asians. Western civilization worship only one God. This traces back to ancient root of Judaism.

Well... I do agree your comment that people seek emotional comfort from their religion. Last but not least, most recognized religions promote love and being good.
