Motorista de caminhão, o jovem Elvis Presley compareceu pela primeira vez a uma gravadora em 1953, quando vai ao estúdio Memphis Recording Service gravar seu primeiro disco, um acetato, por "4 dólares. "My Happiness" e "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" foram as músicas gravadas no disco, o qual deu de presente de aniversário para sua mãe. Foi contratado como cantor de estúdio pela Sun Records, cantando country ao lado de Scotty Moore e Bill Black. Um dia, foi visto cantando "That's Alright", pulando pelo estúdio e batendo no violão. Pediram que ele fizesse outra vez, gravaram e a canção chegou a ser tocada no rádio, sendo que sua interpretação foi considerada bem aceitável, em se tratando de um músico branco e um blues.
