JAKARTA, Aug 30, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Indonesian military is planning to purchase armored vehicles from the French Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to support the planned peace-keeping operation in Lebanon, the national Antara news agency reported Wednesday.

The Defense Ministry officials will leave for France on Sept. 5 to explore the possibility of purchasing 32 armored vehicles to be delivered to Lebanon before the Indonesian peace-keeping troops from Indonesia arrive there, Antara said.

Defense Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Yuwendi has said the peacekeeping operation would cost around 380 billion rupiah (about 42 million U.S. dollars), including the purchase of the armored vehicles.

At present, military personnel and their supporting equipment have been prepared for the dispatch to Lebanon while waiting for official decision from the United Nations on the time of departure, concept of operation, and the rule of engagement.

Some 1,000 TNI personnel are undergoing pre-departure training from Aug. 29 to Sept. 12 in Bogor, just south of Jakarta.
