Es interesante ver que cuando alguien pregunta tonterías, obtiene más de quince respuestas en menos de diez minutos. Alguien que pregunta sobre NUESTRO idioma, recibe dos. Y una de ellas es... francamente basura. ¿Qué pasó? ¿Dónde están todos los que contestan?
To start off, the subjunctive is not a case. We barely have cases in Spanish (the reminicenses are in the personal pronouns). The subjunctive is a mood (as opposed to the indicative).
The subjunctive mood does not see the action as real and objective, but as dependent on the subjective element by the person speaking. Let's take an example. Saber (as it is irregular). You know that present tense indicative mood is "Juan sabe" (as.. in.. "he knows the answer", etc.). But... if you are almost sure he DOES NOT know, you'd say "No creo que Juan sepa". The problem for this mood is.. those tenses get.. mmm.. how to say it? They get somewhat weird. Present tense, as in the example above, shows some situation in the current time (that Juan does not know the answer today). But the present tense of the subjunctive can show a future: "Deseo que Juan sepa pronto la respuesta". In this one you are hoping for something to happen in the future.
This mood is normally found in a sentence which main verb is in present, in past perfect or in future:
"Te prohibo que vayas."
"Te he prohibido que vayas."
"Te prohibiré que vayas."
But it can also be present in an independent sentence, thus showing a wish or a doubt:
"¡Viva México!"
"Quizá tengas razón."

En cuanto a "la español" si hablas del idioma es el idioma español (masculino), por lo tanto "el español"
Y en cuanto a "espero que me entiendes" :)), justamente ahí no se usa el indicativo, se usa el presente del subjuntivo "espero que me entiendas"
