"This point leads us to another myth about memory: sleep-learning. For many years, the United States and the former Soviet Union funded numerous studies that explored the use of sleep-learning. However, the results showed that sleep-learning wasn't a good way to learn. Some people did learn what they were hearing on tape.. but because it woke them up! If we did this all the time, we'd never sleep, and exhaustion is fatal to memory.
Some companies seel audiotapes that purport to 'teach' you while you sleep. You are asked to believe that, as the tape drones on beneath your pillow, you're learning and will remember what you've learned the next day or even weeks later. My advice: if you are learning Spanish in your sleep to prepare for a trip to Latin America, make sure that you pack a good Spanish dictionary. Better still, take a translator.
Sleep-learning isn't an efficient way to learn. You're far better off trying to remember material when you're awake by reading, studying, or listening to lectures."
