She is as tall as, if not taller than, her sister.
原先是這樣的---
If she is not taller than her sister, she is as tall as her sister.
(她如果沒有比她姊(妹)高, 那就跟她姊(妹)一樣高)
這是用到英文"原級"和"比較級", 但這樣講太累贅, 所以就把"If she is not taller than her siste"此一副詞子句, 改為"副詞片語"( if not taller than)來讓這句話精簡, 就變成
"She is as tall as, if not taller than, her sister."
英文原級-- 是表示兩樣事物具一樣程度的特性或動作等等, 像是一樣高, 跑一樣快等, 句型是 "A + 動詞 + as 形容詞或副詞 as + B", 例
Mary is as old as Tom. (Mary 跟 Tom 一樣年紀)
She can run as fast as Tom. (她跑得跟 Tom 一樣快)
比較級-- 是表示比較兩樣事物特性或從事動作等等, 有不同的程度.
句型是 "A + 動詞 + 形容詞或副詞比較級 than + B", 例
Mary is older than Tom. (Mary 年紀比 Tom 大)
She can run faster than Tom. (Mary 跑得比 Tom 快)
所以仿效你問的那句話型式, 就可說--
Mary can run as fast as, if not faster, Tom. (Mary即使不能跑得比 Tom 快, 至少也可一樣快)
