這個跟"關係代名詞"的用法有關
第一句：The earth which we live" on" is a planet.
拆開看應該是
The earth is a planet.
We live on earth.
把兩句合成一句就變成你打的那樣
翻譯是：我們住的地球是一個行星。
至於加on，那是限定用法，因為live是不及物動詞
後面一定要加介係詞，加on、in、about都可以，看你要表達什麼而定
例句：She lives about ten miles from my house.
(她住在離我們的屋子大約十英里遠處。)
第二句：The earth where we live is a planet.
原句應為 The earth which we live on is a planet.
後來把介係詞on提到關係代名詞的前面
變成 The earth
而 on which=where
這是英文的習慣用法
in which 也等於where

這是文法的問題...
以which為首的子句是形容詞子句，主要是形容which前的主詞the earth，形容詞子句的特色，就是「不完整句」，以此句為例，live on的受格是the earth，所以on不可省略(因為live是不及物動詞)；而第二句的where子句是副詞子句，雖然同樣是修飾the eath，但顧名思義，此副詞子句可有可無，而且是一個獨立的「完整句」，因此live後不必加任何介系詞，以where為首的句子是另一個獨立的修飾語，而where等於上句on which之意。原句分解如下：( []為修飾語 )
The earth [which we live on] is a planet.
→The earth [on which we live] is a planet.
→The earth [where we live] is a planet.
