Your translation is incorrect. "in bocca al lupo" stands for "in the mouth of the wolf".

This phrase is usually used to say "good luck" to a person. This last always replies immediately saying "crepi il lupo" that stands for "wolf must die".

For example, your italian friend will attend an examination at the university. Before he leaves home, you see him off and say "in bocca al lupo", he replies immediately "crepi il lupo". The "wolf" is figuratively the thing with which he will cope (the examination in this example), so saying "wolf must die" he wishes himself that all will go right.

WARNING: If the person doesn't answer with "crepi il lupo", he will have to cope with "bad luck".

An equivalent expression used in Italy is:
"In kulo alla balena" that stands for "in the whale's ass"
at which it is necessary to reply with
"speriamo che non caghi" that stands for "hoping she will not refine"

The rules are the same as the previous case.
;-)

There'a a simple way to translate "in bocca al lupo". Sure, it's "good luck" but in english you just say "BREAK A LEG!".

tecnicamente e' giusto pure "to" perche' esprime moto verso luogo....

comunque come dice giustamente l'utente sopra di me vuol dire buona fortuna!

good luck!

Chit-caat7

CarloP went straight to the point. Nice and clear.

I,just want to add that another possible way to say that would be "break a leg", altough I think it's more British than American.
