為什麼the USA前一定要加the?

為什麼the USA前一定要加the?而America 前卻不用呢？I am from the USA.=I am from America.

一般來說,本身是專有名詞的話，是不用加冠詞的，如America, Spain, Russia！而本身是一般名詞大寫成專有名詞的話,則需要加上冠詞the，如the United States (of America), the United Nations, the United Kingdom!states, nations, kingdom 皆可小寫為一般名詞，所以他們大寫成專有名詞仍不失在一般名詞時的用法：特定指涉時要加定冠詞！但是像America這類的專有名詞，本身就是大寫的專有名詞，你沒有辦法將它小寫成一般名詞，所以它們不像一般名詞一樣需要加冠詞的！

the Rockies, the Alps, the Mimalayas 這些都是山脈(a range of mountains)的名稱,概念上是複數的型態,所以前加上冠詞來表示"THE" range of mountains!
向the Rockies的另一名字是: "the" Rocky moutains (這裡的Rocky是用單數的,同理可以推論the Alps跟the Himalays也是相同的概念)!
指於你所說的Queen Mary, 跟 Victoria,這是啥?queen前加the指某一個皇后這還說得過去,Victoria為何要加the?沒看過,可以給我個出處嗎?

專有名詞複數型加冠詞the,這點我跟 shawn的意見相同,雖然我在意見上所說的多為山脈的複數型,但是不代表其他專有名詞的複數型沒有(我只是依照你的問題來回答,而你只給我山脈的例子),此外"群島"跟"山脈"一樣都是"一群,複數"的概念,並沒有跟我所說的相衝突,這是其一!

其二,你所另舉的例子:the Pacific (or the Pacific Ocean), the Suez Canal...這裡符合我所說的當他們"小寫為一般名詞,所以他們大寫成專有名詞仍不失在一般名詞時的用法: 特定指涉時要加定冠詞",這點也從你的例子中獲得證明! ocean, canal等皆為一般名詞!

我想這應該是可加可不加的,如果加的話,我想這個解釋應該就是在英文使用中,若有超過一個人事物有相同名詞的時候,我們會用定冠詞來作特定指涉!Queen Mary或Victoria都是指皇后,當然不能加冠詞,這是大不敬,所以在船隻名稱上加冠詞來表示the Queen Mary是指船而不是指皇后,那這樣的解釋就很順理成章了!也就是說像這種以人名為紀念來給船隻(或其他交通工具)取名時,若會造成指涉的混淆時,則有必要加上定冠詞來釐清!以下是另一個船隻沒有the的例子:http://www.nih.ww2site.com/nih/addenda/queenemma.html

又或者是the Victoria等其實是the Victoria (ship)或the (ship) Victoria 的省略,所以當然冠詞(依照我上述一般名詞的原則),當然是要加的了!總之,冠詞在英文中實在是很麻煩的,有時我看連老外都莫衷一是,有些其實都是習慣用法罷了,硬要去做規則似乎又吹毛求疵,所以shawn, maybe we're both right! 我想我們越談越遠了,提問大大恐怕已頭昏腦脹,我們還是就此打住吧!

1.) 「專有名詞」用以表『國家』、『專有形容詞』、『人民』、『語言』各有不同：
***『國家』：China 中國、America美國、England英國。
***『專有形容詞』：Chinese中國的、American美國的、English英國的。
***『人民』(總稱)：the Chinese中國人民、the Americans美國人民、the English英國人民。
***『人-單數』：a Chinese一位中國人、an American一位美國人、an Englishman一位英國人。
***『人-複數』：two Chinese二位中國人、two Americans二位美國人、two Englishmen二位英國人。
***『語言』：Chinese中文、American English美式英文、English英文。

2.) 複數形 (字尾有『S』)的專有名詞＋「the」。
【例】：the United States (美國)、the USA (美國)、the United Nations (聯合國)、the Rockies (洛磯山脈)。

3.) 帝國名/ 朝代名等專有名詞，前面＋「the」。
【例】：the British Commonwealth of Nations (大英國協)、the Ming Dynasty (明朝)。
所以，I am from the USA. = I am from America.

1.) 至於大師第一個說明的, e.g.『所以前加上冠詞來表示"THE" range of mountains!』。又如，the Philippines 菲律賓群島；卻是「島嶼」的概念，而並非只是「山脈」的概念而已。所以，才將之歸類為：『 “複數形(字尾有『S』)的專有名詞＋「the」”；e.g. the Alps，有山脈群島的群體概念』。

因為USA是United States of America的縮寫
它是個特定的縮寫 故要加the這個定冠詞 特別指出來
ex: the USA, the UK(United Kingdom)
而America已經很清楚其名詞意義 (指美洲或美國)
所以不用再特別加上the

在口語的習慣上亦是如此
