裡頭有一句話應怎麼翻譯或解讀:

Liberal arts is changing faster than ever, but not fast enough to accomodate the increasing pace of history. --> We cannot make ideas run the gauntlet of centuries before admitting them to academia.

We cannot make ideas run the gauntlet of centuries before admitting them to academia.

因為時代進步的速度太快,當一些新觀念新思維出現的時候,我們無法再像古代一樣,把這些觀念放在那裡一兩百年,等通過了歷代賢哲的詰問質疑之後,再讓它們進入供奉在學術殿堂裡,奉為真理。

註釋:Gauntlet 古代的笞刑

run the gauntlet 讓罪人裸體在兩排人中間奔跑並受鞭打,引申為「眾**責,廣受質疑」

academia.從事高層次教育與研究的科學界和文化界的統稱

那請問, "run the gauntlet"不是原本就是一個固定用法嗎? It means "being exposed to criticism" 受批評等的意思...我是因為卡在這idiom的意思, 才覺得上下文很難通....您覺得呢?
