對等連接詞是連接文法作用相同的單字、片語、子句或句子的連接詞,如:
and(和), but(但是), or(或者,否則), nor(也不), for(因為), so(所以), therefore(因此), yet(然而,但,仍然), still(然而,但,仍然)。

從屬連接詞是連接從屬子句的連接詞,可以引導名詞子句,形容詞子句和副詞子句。常見的有:
if(是否,如果), when(當...時), as(當...時,因為,正如), since(自從,既然), until(直到), before(在...之前), because(因為), unless(除非), whether(是否), than(比), though(雖然)。

連接詞片語是起連接詞作用的字群,如:
as soon as(一...就), as long as (so long as)(只要,在...期間), in case(假如), as if(好像), even if (even though)(即使), as far as (so far as)(就...而言), now that(既然), no matter how (where, what)(不論...), as well as(也)。

介系詞從形式上來分有四種。
類別1:只有一個字的簡單介系詞。如:
at, before, for, from, in, next, of, over, since, to, under, with
類別2:由兩個字合成的合成介系詞。如:
inside, into, out of, outside, upon, within, without
類別3:由兩個介系詞組成的雙重介系詞。如:
from among(從...當中), from behind(從...後面), till after(直到...之後)。
類別4:由兩個或多個單字組成的片語介系詞。如:
at the end of(在...最後), according to(根據), because of(由於), by means of(以...為手段), in case of(萬一), in need of(需要), in front of(在...之前), in spite of(儘管...還是), instead of(代替), owing to(由於)。
