I believe many people watched this game last night and I bet everyone of them shout, "Fxxx" when Wang gave up that walk-off homer in the 9th inning. I can\'t believe Torr let Wang continue 9th inning especially in 8th inning, some warning signs such as walks and sharp line out...I said that was another stupid decision.Secondly, Rivera himself is ready to close that game...(although he already pitched 2+ inning in two consecutive days) Thirdly, it is meaningless for a starter to complete a non-shoutout game.I don\'t believe what most people said it is simply because their bullpan overworked for many days which might be true but Rivera is still available. And that is the job for a closer, right?Note: Rivera wanted to take the ball in the ninth, but he understood why Torre decided to stick with Wang. "I wanted to be there, but it\'s not up to me," Rivera said. "I\'ll never second-guess Mr. Torre. If it was up to me, I\'d pitch every day. But I look at today and he looks at the season. That\'s why he\'s the manager and I\'m a pitcher."So My question is why Torr let Wang complete that heartbreaking game?

Torr is yankees' manager and Rivera is their closer.

This question is designed for discussion so there is no "correct" answer while everyone's response is very good. It's hard, very hard to select one. However, I don't trust 投票 very much...I will pick up one tomorrow.

These two days Rivera pitched 3 innings in two games...meaning that day he can do that...without a problem...

Today's game (6-23) is still solid...unfortunately some long ball did some damages...

There are three possible reasons...

First, he trusts Wang more than others in the bullpen.

Second, he thinks Wang can do good to complete the game.

Third, he wants to challenge the potentiality of Wang to complete the whole game.

Torre is the coach of Yankees, as a coach, they have to be protective to their players. He cant give up a player's health for winning game. In his perspective, losing a game doesn't mean anything; he needs to think for the rest of the season. If rivera did show up on the 9th inning, and did close the game but got injured, it's not that worth it eh? It's not yetplay off, rivera would probably have to help in play off, but I believe that Yankees will still make it to play off even if they lost this game.

Further more Wang only pitched about 90 balls up to 8th inning. As a pitcher, it's not too much to continue to 100+. Torre gave Wang this chance to learn, and I bet Wang learned a lot from that walk off homerun. Although he lost the game, his excellent performance still impressed all. What matters is not winning or losing, but I can see Torre has full trust in Wang, and want to train him.

Looking at the other side, Wang must have learned some lesson. He now can stand more pressure, and if he's coming to the same situation again, he would know better what to do.

oh and by the way, the batters should have some responsibility in losing this game. They had so many chances in the first few innings but they just missed it. Have you realized? Randy Johnson could win even if he gives up 6 points, yet Wang lost with a score of 3:2

lol Wang's going to face Ichiro in his next game I think~all I can say is Yankees' batter are ALWAYS soft when Wang's pitching. I don't remember seeing Wang winning a game easily...

let's not talk about torre's decision..if you were Wang, would you like to finish that game?if I am..I would...

i think even if rivera can do it that day..torre wants to give Wang a chance, and that was the perfect chance. The pressure of 1 point game is precious and Wang has grew from it!

well, they did burned out their bullpen the other daythe only pitcher available was Villonei do agree it was a bad call, but what can you say?Wang seemed to be cruising through bottom of the 9th until he gave up that singlei did not think it was a big deal till Zimmerman swung on that first pitchso you'll never knowit is alright, things happenit was a great game, until the very endwhat can you do about it?Zimmerman is suppose to be the next Jeter

2006-06-22 20:25:48 補充:
yes, Rivera is certainly capable of pitching thenbut he had pitched 2 games before the Wang gameso it is best NOT to let him pitch on a rather meaningless game, by meaningless i mean non play-off situationso it was an okay call for Torre, i dont endorse it, but i can understand why

I think Torre let Wang to stay on the mound because he trusted him. A baseball coach has plenty of stuff on his mind, I think, he knew what he was doing. Moreover, there's news about Randy Johnson that he is not allow to pitch lately, so, maybe Torre asked to let Wang stay on the field longer in order to save other pitcher's strength.
