塞尚他用思考而非感覺來作畫的畫家,他一直保持著和諧、冷靜、平衡和對形與色特殊的感覺。以主觀的熱情,客觀地探究自然裏的景物所含藏的幾何性質和構成造型,而發出「圓錐、球體、圓柱」的形式論。
學習法律出身的塞尚,一生的藝術生活,都是從自身接觸自然而來。他雖然對印象派在外光和色彩上肯定了其成就。但他認為印象派的表現太表面,進而自身去探索不同於印象派的表現法,注重表現物質的具體性、穩定性和內在結構。並且用色彩的對比來表現物像的體積感
1876 年,塞尚終於掌握到自己的方向。 由於對印象主義理念的充分認識,他已能深刻巧妙地分析色彩和色調,來突顯物體旳量感,另外他也探出純粹色彩表現光線的可行性;所以,他臻控制色塊來構成繪畫的可能。
1990 年他己經被大眾公認為天才,尤其前衛畫家更是欽佩。 他告訴人們如何在大自然裏找出圓錐、球形和圓柱的結構,指出實驗性的新方向,這些到最後就演變成了立體主義。雖然他已死去;但他對後世的影響有增無減,地位獨特。如今,他是眾所公認接通十九世紀與二十世紀兩種極端的一座主要橋樑。
