Original Name      When the Japanese came in 1895, the waterway still had no recorded name. However by 1920 the Japanese colonists had completed their surveys of Southern Taiwan. In 1924 the waterway became part of the newly-drawn Takao City Area, and was marked as Taka-O River.  Modern Name of Love River     In the 1930s and 1940s the Yen Cheng stretch of the river had become a favourite romancing spot for lovers. Consequently local entrepreneurs set up businesses to allow the couples to row boats on the waters of the river. One such successful boating enterprise, owned by Chen Chiang-pan, was named the 'Love River Rowboat Shop'.     In June 1949, after a typhoon had swelled the river, one more tragic end to romance attracted the attention of the local press. The journalist accidentally named the river as 'Love River' in his headline. Theold name of Takao River had been so abruptly changed to Kaohsiung River by the unpopular new government, became established as Love River.         In 1968, during the tenor of Mayor Yang Ching-hu, it was proposed to change the name of Shou-shan to Wan-shou-shan (Long Life Mountain) and the name of Love River (Ai-ho) to Benevolence River (Jen-ai-ho) to show reverence to President Chiang Kai-shek. This name change was approved by the Ministry of Interior and promulgated on 31 October 1970, Chiang Kai-shek's birthday.   In 1991, three years after the death of Chiang Kai-shek's son President Chiang Ching-kuo, Kaohsiung City Councillor Cheng Kuang-fu proposed, and Councillors Chang I-lang and Lee Fu-cheng seconded, that the names of the mountain and river revert to their earlier ones. This was approved by the Ministry of the Interior, and in 1992 the waterway again became Love River.

If you went back to visit the former Love River in Kaohsiung, you would be extremely amazed at the big changes that have already happened, currently it is so soft, beautiful, and refined as well as intellectual and full of taste all characteristics supposedly available to any river in metropolitan areas. People have regained the willingness to stay close to her and actually the love of her. The scent of coffee along the banks and the richer moods of culture signify a rebirth of the culturally important Love River basin in the center of the constantly changing city of Kaohsiung.
