A transferred epithet is an adjective modifying a noun which it cannot logically modify, yet which works because the metaphorical meaning remains clear:

轉類修飾語指的是將本應該用來修飾某一類名詞的修飾語用來修飾另一類名詞，
例如，She was so worried about her son that she spent several sleepless nights.


3 中文解釋之二

Transferred epithet是採用表示性質和特徵的形容詞或相當於形容詞的詞來修飾、限定與它根本不同屬性的名詞。這種修辭手法能與漢語中的移就基本相似。例如：
The doctor's face expressed a kind of doubting admiration. （用"疑惑"修飾限定"欽佩"）醫生的臉上流露出欽佩而又帶有疑惑的神情。
