英文裡的形容詞比較級和副詞的比較級用法有一點不同
例如: John is taller than Jill.是用形容詞比較級,因為句子裡的主要動詞是BeV, 形容詞是修飾人的狀態
如果是John sings songs more sweetly than Jill.是用副詞比較級,因為句子裡的主要動詞是一般動詞sing, 副詞是修飾動作的程度
但是有一些動詞是很特別的像是聯繫動詞(Linking verb)-seem, look, appear...後面加的是形容詞
例如: John looks happy.
如果我要說John 看起來比 Jill更高興應該怎麼說才是正確的?
是 John looks happier than Jill. (用形容詞比較級)
還是 John looks more happily than Jill. (用副詞比較級)

關於黑牡丹說的"John looks happily..."
這句意思應該是說"John看起來比Jill 快樂"對吧??
如果look 是當"看起來"時,後面是要接"形容詞",而不是接"副詞" 所以寫"happily"是錯的!!

事實上，形容詞和副詞的比較級或最高級形式到底要用"-er; -est"或是"more ~; the most ~" 是根據該形容詞或副詞的音節數來決定的：
加"-er; -est"通常是單一音節的字，如：tall, young, large, big, hot...。或是雙音節的字且以"-y, -er, -ow, -le"結尾的，如：pretty, clever, narrow, noble...。
加"more ~; the most ~"通常大部份的雙音節的單字及三個音節以上的，以及字尾以"-ly"結尾的副詞，則是屬於此類。
回到原本的問題，就如你所說的"linking verbs"後面直接加"形容詞"，所以在用比較級的時候就直接形容詞後面加"-er"就可以了。
