The blues is a genre of folk song, largely improvised, that originally grew out of the cultural milieu of American blacks. Like ragtime, it was a predecessor of jazz whose styles and forms were quickly taken over by jazz musicians. Unlike ragtime, however, blues continued to develop parallel to jazz, and the two idioms became so closely intertwined as to be inseparable. The history of blues prior to the earliest recordings, made about 1920, is largely conjectural, since it grew from an improvised folk music for which there is virtually no documentation.
