In my personal opinion a good friend can be anyone. A good friend can be a co-worker, relative or a spouse. This person could live next door or miles and miles away. I think a good friend is someone who listens and cares. A good friend doesn't have to call and check every night, but they are there when needed. Good friends will make time when there isn't any, and they stay late even when they know they should go. They make sacrifices and stand up for their friend. This doesn't mean good friends have to believe the same things or even be interested in the same things. Friends listen to each other's dreams and aspirations, then they go for them with the help of each other.

To a young child a good friend is probably someone who lives close by, or someone that shares their cookies at lunch. As people get older and approach that awkward Junior High stage the definition of a friend could be something different every day, or maybe sometimes there is no such thing as a good friend. High school is where most people find themselves and set their own standards. This is when people realize what who they are and they want in a friendship. This certainly doesn't mean that people keep the same friends all through high school, but through experiences with many different types of people personal standards will be established.
