The global semiconductor industry would see a slight growth of 8 percent next year, reaching a size of US$240 billion (NT$8 trillion), market research firm IDC said recently.
The company said the industry saw its capacity utilization rate drop to a low during the second quarter as a result of continued inventory digestion that began earlier this year. Capital expenditure meanwhile dropped 12 percent and would be at the same, if not a lower, level next year, the company said.
IDC has also adjusted forecast of this year's total semiconductor growth by five percent as a result of better-than-expected PC and handheld device shipments. Market size would be US$224 billion by the end of the year, it said.
As for next year, growth would be eight percent from this year to allow for market size of US$240 billion, the company said.
Prices will continue to be driven by demand in emerging markets, and wireless chips will continue to drive the market for consumer electronic devices, the company said, adding the size of the global IC industry in 2009 would be twice what it is now.
Meanwhile, the market for Flash memory chips has seen explosive growth of 43 percent, reaching a size of US$9.2 billion, due to the popularity of iPod and various types of memory cards such as CompactFlash, Smart Media, Secure Digital and the Memory Stick, that use the NAND Flash technology.
Taiwan has over the decades positioned itself as a key player in the global IC supply chain network and is home to the world's No. 1 and No. 2 made-to-order chipmakers -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and the United Microelectronics Corp.
The government of Taiwan has listed semiconductor as one of the two trillion-dollar industries under the "Two-Trillion, Two-Star" national development project. The other trillion-dollar industry under the project is TFT-LCD, a type of flat-panel display
