when、while都表“當...時候”時，如果主句表示的是短暫動作，從句的動作是延續的，二者可以通用。如：When/While we were playing happily, our mother came back. （我們正玩得高興時，媽媽回來了。）但二者也有區別：1）when既可表時間點也可表時間段，即從句中的謂語動詞可以是瞬間動詞（不能與while互換），也可以是延續性動詞（一般可以與while互換）。如： When I arrived at the airport, I found the plane had taken off. （瞬間）（當我到達機場時發現飛機已經起飛了。） When you watch TV, you should keep a certain distance to protect your eyes.（延續）（當你看電視的時候，你應該保持一定的距離以保護你的視力。） 特殊句型：A. Jane was on half way to school when her classmate caught up with him.（在簡去學校的半路上他的同學趕上了他）when=and at that moment suddenly主句往往是一個過程，從句是一個瞬間動作 B. He was about to leave when the telephone rang. （他正準備離開的時候突然電話響了）2）while只能表時間段，即從句中的謂語動詞只能是延續性動詞，表示動作或狀態的持續，而且經常是用進行時。如： We must keep silent while others are studying. （當其他人學習時，我們必須保持安靜） 特殊句型：A. While I admit the paper is very difficult, I don’t think you should give it up. （雖然我承認這份試卷很難，但我認為你不應該放棄。） B. He likes pop music, while I am fond of classical music. （他喜歡流行音樂，我喜歡古典音樂。）while 是並列連詞，引導的是並列句，表對比
