St. Josephs Day- USA, Italy
In the USA, St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated by Italian-Americans every March 19th. Many Italian communities construct giant food altars to honor St. Joseph, who was the father of Jesus from the Christian religion. The food on these elaborate altars is blessed by priests and then distributed to members of the community. Traditionally, blessed “charms” are also given out at these altars, usually made from dried lima beans and small pictures of saints. The largest celebration of this event in the USA takes place at the Plaza D’Italia in New Orleans, Louisiana.
