grey matter = 名詞。腦部與中樞神經褐灰色的的神經組織，由神經細胞與其樹狀組織構成，也稱為 " grey substance" 或者 "substantia grisea" （拉丁文學名）。大腦中的 "grey matter " （褐灰組織）職司「資訊的處理」，而 " whtie matter" （白色組織）則職司 「資訊的傳遞」。
因為這些褐灰色的神經組織是大腦的主要成分，所以也常被引伸為 「頭腦」或者「智力」的意思。例句：" If you'd only use your gray matter, you'd get the answer immediately. "
