通常國外的電影分類都是用英文字縮寫來標示的:
限制級:
NC-17 (No one 17 and under admitted 十七歲以下禁止觀賞)
輔導級:
R (Restricted 17歲以下者應有父母或監護人陪同觀賞)
保護級則分成兩種:
PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned 父母親要特別注意! 電影中有些內容可能不適合13歲以下青少年觀賞)
PG (Parental Guidance Suggested 建議由父母親陪同觀賞. 電影中有些內容可能不適合兒童觀賞)
普遍級:
G (General Audiences 適合所有年齡層觀眾欣賞)

限制級 21歲 縮寫: R21
Mature 18 for persons 18 years
輔導級 18 歲 縮寫: M18
No Children under 16
(輔導級或保護級) 16歲 縮寫:NC16

保護級 縮寫:PG
General
普遍級 縮寫:G
