Tilda Swinton was born on November 5th, 1961, in London. Born into an Upper-class Scottish military family, Tilda actually grew up in a castle owned by her family for generations. In her youth she was educated in a boarding school in England, along with Diana Spencer - later to become Diana, Princess of Wales. In 1980 she began studying at Cambridge University, and graduated in 1983 with a degree in Social and Political Science/English Literature. After graduating from Cambridge, Tilda began to establish a reputation in theatre, and ended up joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for a year - a period in her life that she later described as a time she spent "finding out what I didn't want to do" (City Limits Interview, 1990, Oct. issue). However, she also acted in plays at other theatres in the UK and around the world. At this early stage of her choice of roles there is already the attraction to gender-bending (or gender-blending, in her own words) roles: as Mozart in Pushkin's "Mozart and Salieri", and as a working class woman impersonating her dead husband during World War II, in Manfred Karges' "Man to Man", later made into a film by John Maybury (in 1991). In 1985 she began her long collaboration with English director Derek Jarman. Soon she became Jarman's close friend and regular talent, appearing in each one of his movies until his death of Aids in 1994. During this period she acted in 8 films made by Jarman, among them Caravaggio, The Last of England, The Garden, Edward II, Wittgenstein and finally Blue, which was completed shortly before his death. In 1992 she appeared in what is probably her most well-known movie apart from Jarman's work - Sally Potter's Orlando, in which she played the part of a young nobleman who lives for 400 years and changes sex from man to woman during that period. This adaptation of Virginia Woolf's fantastic novel has won great praise and acclaim all over the world.Tilda's careful choice of roles has acquired her a small but very passionate and devoted group of admirers. Although she could have taken advantage of the fame that followed Orlando's release and could have become a Hollywood celebrity, she preferred to continue her fascinating body of work doing risky experimental projects, often opting to work with young and unknown directors who presented interesting scripts, rather than large salaries. Her artistic choices are not limited to theatre and cinema alone: among other projects, she has worked with contemporary artists, acting for videoart performances and for live installations. Her most well known installation/performance piece is "The Maybe", in which she slept in a glass case for 8 hours a day at the Serpentine gallery in London. She also appeared in Orbital's music video for "The Box", shown on MTV and other music video channels. Derek Jarman's death has proved to be traumatic for Tilda: as she had worked so closely and continuously with him for such a long time, she has commented that "she felt as though she'd lost her day job". But beyond humor, she had lost a dear friend and artistic mentor who was in many ways responsible for shaping her cinematic reputation. Despite this loss, she continued to pave her way in the world of cinema and appeared in films such as Susan Streitfeld's "Female Perversions" (1995), John Maybury's "Love is the Devil" (1996), and Lynn Hershman's "Conceiving Ada" (1996). After a forced break, due to her pregnancy and the birth of her twins (one of the most personal projects in which she has been involved…), she returned to the screen, working with Tim Roth, in his debut behind the camera as a director, shooting "The War Zone" (1998). Her final film for the 90's was a great surprise to all her long time admirers, as she played next to Leonardo DiCaprio in Danny Boyle's movie, "The Beach" (1999). Her most recently released film is "The Deep End" (2000). In the near future we can look forward to the release of "TEKNOLUST", another collaboration with Lynn Hershman, and also "ADAPTATION", with Nicholas Cage and Meryl Streep - making another step towards Hollywood. If this trend continue, it won't be long before we can see Tilda receiving an academy award!
