X Factor is Simon Cowell's derivate of Pop Idol, isn't it? Of course there are singing contests like that. 'Deutschland sucht den Superstar', or shortened 'DSDS', is the german equivalent to 'Pop Idol', 'Britain's got talent' is 'Das Supertalent' in Germany, then there's this 'Popstars' show, where a whole group is assembled. Furthermore, there's a show by german tv-celebrity Stefan Raab. And there was a german 'Star Search' a few years ago.
The majority of the winners of these shows sings english songs and the music is targeted at an international audience. The music of these winners is often quite successful at the moment they have won the contests, but in the long term only the first season winners seem to establish in the music scene. So I think it's the same situation as it is in the UK or US.
The most popular acts where, without a doubt, 'No Angels'.

X-Factor is a Program about mysterious happenings on tv (in germany..)
...But if u want to have a singing contest programm i can advise The Sinstar Series. For Play Station 2. They are pretty good.
