In Britain we walk on the pavements.If you live in the countryside(out of London) they have no pavements and we call them country lanes and we have to walk in the road.Remember we only had horses and carts and no motor cars so there wasn't a lot of traffic on the road.Pavements did not exsist only in the towns not the villages.

USA has strange English !!! Why you have to "walk on the side"(sidewalk). All Americans are strange, they park their cars on the driveway, and they drive their cars on the parkway. ha..ha!!.. Americans
