who was the french actor in the bogarde 1958 film: A TALE OF TWO CITIES....?

he was the guard who checked the passengers of the coach as it left and entered france.
in his scenes bogarde quips that the only reason he is in france is " YOUR FRENCH WINES".

the actor im thinking of has the piercing looks similar to anton diffring.
