Because Lawrence is writing a travel essay, he more or less has a duty to
accurately portray both the people and the "spirit of place." But I admire his
technique of looking wide-screen over the vista and then zeroing in on "the
dark-green napkin with a few white tiny buildings" which looked like it "had
been lowered from heaven and left, there at the foot of the mountains. . . .so
alone and, as it were, detached from the world in which it lies, a spot." His
eye is the camera lens zooming in and at the same time creating mystery about
the isolated place he intends to explore.
