sorry for my crappy words...to happy: some perfer it here over the sates but there are a lot of people here (me and my husband) that are here because we got a paper that said we had to. We have been here three months and would give anything to go back to the states. No offense, but it just is not home.

Dear Samantah,
I guess from your question U and your husband are US soldiers deployed in Italy. First of all, lucky you! Better here than in Iraq or Afghanistan. Im quite happy for you and really sorry for all your collegues there.
Anyhow, concerning your presence in Italy, I have nothign against you or your country. You are only promoting the US national interest and it is your right,. US is the stronger one now (it will not be forever) and so it is quite normal that the stronger protect its national intrest in any possible way. This is politics.
What I dont like is:
a) the rethotric about the fact that US base in Italy are in OUR intrest. This is simply a lie.
b) the fact that our governement (this one, the previous one, it does not make any difference) never try seriously to force US soldiers to respect Italian law and to pay for their mistakes (have you ever heard about Cernis?). We are weaker than US, ok, but we should keep at least some dignity and a sovereign state
Anyhow I like the fact we have a common hope: for you to go back in the states, for me to see U and all your collegues go back in the states. I'm sorry this is not the hope of our governements.

Dear Samantha, Italian people generally do not mind American soldiers being here. But it does not mean they are not worried: what if American bases in Italy become a target for the enemies of the U.S.A.? Italian towns and people would be in danger.
Moreover, it is not always true that American soldiers can not harm Italian people: as individuals, they can and sometimes they do commit offence and break the law, like everybody. But they generally do not undergo a trial, and if they do, they are discharged. We are not talking only of minor offence, but also manslaughter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalese_cable-car_disaster) and rape (http://www.camera.it/_dati/leg14/lavori/stenografici/sed449/bt11.htm) . The victims want justice, and they do not receive. Anti-american parties use these facts to say that American soldiers should not be here, as they act like an occupation force not subject to Italian laws.
In my opinion, when U.S.A. soldiers first came during WWII, they did us a big favour as they helped Europe to ged rid of Hitler. 60 years after they are still here and the reason why most people do not see them as an occupation force is that we share the same values. I am sure that the American troops would have worked over in these last decades if something had happened in Italy that could cause any trouble to the U.S.A. (for instance, if the communists had won the elections and took power!). I personally believe that American soldiers should stay, if necessary. But they should either be subject to Italian law, or be forbidden to go out from their bases. I am aware that most respect the law, but the few that do not heighten antiamerican feelings.
Anyway, where are you in Italy? If it is Vicenza or Aviano, we could meet for a drink!

I don't mind having US soldiers here, I think that the bases we have here can give many job opportunities to Italian people, too. I know it's not your choice, and not even mine having my boyfriend in Kabul now... It's a horrible job but someone has to do it, isn't it? Just be proud as I am..if you wish, contact me by e-mail!Cheers

I'm sorry Samanta, but I don't think I did really understand your question...if you want to, you can reach me through the mail...anyway, just one little thing: I really think the Americans that live here in Italy, are here because they asked that, and not because they didn't want to....don't tell me they don't get the chanche to choose where to go...!
