You can see in http://www.geopatronyme.com/
Put your name in the white place "votre nom" (=your name) and click on "Valider" (~go)
After you will see if your name exists and where in France.
Often in France, a surname is a name of a place (town or village or little place). You can try to find if your name exists in mapporama :-)

Yes it does! It was the name of people who were born in villages named Laferté or Laferté-"something" (like Laferté-sur-Aube, La Ferté-Villeneuil, Laferté-sur-Amance, the second name is often a river....) La Ferté means house or fortification. Many villages called Laferté are located in Brittany (north-west) or in the north east (Champagne-Ardennes) of France....

Looks like a possible last name, indeed. La Ferté is also a city.

Edit :
from http://nom-de-famille.linternaute.com/nom/124138/laferte.shtml
Laferte is currently the name of 282 people in France.
