La canción es de la autoría de BEN E. KING, Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller, su primera versión la cantó el propio Ben E. King y la han versionado como mil veces, pues realmente es bonita y la letra dice mucho.
Entre las versiones más importantes está, obviamente, la de John Lennon, pero también la han cantado U2, Greenday, Otis Redding y un largo etcétera. Fue rankeada por Rolling Stones (la revista) en el puesto 121 dentro de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos y la organización Broadcast Music Incorporated certifica que es la cuarta canción más ejecutada o reproducida del siglo XX con más 7 millones de performances.
