it is hard to tell what's hapenned really, but it is sure that it's not religion related.

It's probably a mix of several causes (ghettos, mass media, group spirit,...)

What I could say is that foreign reporters have sometimes exagerated the facts. I have watched CNN a few times.

what are you talking about? do you watch cnn? if so, you should just quit, they don't have a clue about what happens here, they just try to guess with videos from the net..; this is bullshit!

you are mistaking social riots for racist riots (we are not in Los Angeles in 84 but in France in 2007)
There are social reasons for this revolt (something we call over here "jacquerie"), mainly unemployement, discrimination when hiring (if you do not have the "right" name, the "right" skin colour, the "right" address, or the "right" age, then forget it you will not even get to the screening process, your resume will go straight to the garbage bin)
And I must add that there are also "circumstancial" reasons like words spoken by Mr Sarkozy that inflamed the youth of the suburbs (the word "racaille" was used out of context and people living in the suburbs thought, and rightly so, that the minister was insulting all of them, instead of trying to find out why two young people were killed while being chased by the state police)

Humm, be careful... People here think that they are the only ones who can have a right idea about theyr own land, but they also think they are the only ones who can have a right idea abouth other's lands XD

Your question is intresting, but im not good enough in english to explain clearly my point of view about the question, sorry :)

Je ne me suis pas absenté, alors, dis-moi: Quand se sont -elles produites? Tu n'aurais pas tendance à en rajouter parce que ça t'arrange? ou bien alors ne connais-tu pas la valeur des mots que tu emploie. je crois plutôt cela.
