They killed war prisoners and Jewish people.

Waffen SS = Waffen Schutzstaffel. Waffen = plural of "arms". Schutzstaffel = Security staff. So Waffen SS = Armed security staff. The SS were the German army's elite corps. In concept, they were a lot like Japan's Samurais, a warrior elite.
