I couldn't find anything on the English Yahoo websearch so I cam here to ask what does bon courage mean in French? I think it means to have strength through adversity?

Hello!

"Bon courage !" can be used when you have problems and need strength.

It can also mean "cheer up!"

I think that you can also translate it roughly by "take care". For instance, at the office at tea-time, when people go back to work . Then it is the same as "have a nice day".

yes that can be taken as you said but it's simply few words to say: keep going.....take good care.....and you'll need some strength to go on .....so I wish all that for you....
The nearest expression isIthink: good luck!

we have another expression as well for "bon courage"..
we just say "merde" (commonplace and rather basic swear word) to the person who needs "strenght thru adversity". Normally, the person should not answer to this swearword (which conspicuously lets you think the person understood what you meant...). Sometimes, to make it even more obvious we say "je te dis merde" ("i do say shit")...
