Shipping services are obviously requested to transport goods (rather than services!) They are therefore requested when such goods are to be used or transformed outside they area of production.

Typical example : oil.

Oil production is concentrated in few production area, while oil usage (as energy, to be transformed in platics and others) is located in every single country of the planet, and in particular in industrialized economies.
