If your story is placed in the northern part of Italy you should use surnames such as ROSSI, BIANCHI, BRAMBILLA, CARATI, MATTEI they are really common ones while in the south you can find names like ESPOSITO, PREGADIO, AMATO,LORUSSO, LOCASCIO. In the central part of Italy you can meet names like CENCI, GHELARDUCCI,BIMBI and so on.
By the way if you give a look to any phone directory you'll probably find lots of more.
