My answer is what is usually admitted by genealogists.
It's an alteration of the pronounciation of Charpentier in english.
It's the same thing when you for Christophe lambert you say Cristopher "lamb hirt" even it is "lamb hair"...so when you have to write it you write with the deformation lambirt.
Why do you say Japan although it should be called Nippon , it's the same procesus of the alteration of the pronounciation.
