All my life I have heard that the French think we are fat, lazy and stupid---is this really true?

'here' in France for the 1st time...because I am enjoying a new friendship w/ a girl from this beautiful country. I am American, and when I traveled there, Paris, Nancy, and several other places, I was not happy...why?, one might ponder... Because I could not speak the native language...only a couple social courtesys. So I think, to your question, that that may be a factor in some amount of negative view towards us. My new friend writes near flawless English vernacular to me, and is the first person from that country to try to know me. Unlike most of my countrymen that answered to your question (provocative I must say) on a negative note, personnally I have nothing against US citizens, only French short sighted fools could tell you that we do not have problems of obesity, problems of insecurity and stuff they only want to impute to your country. But the truth is that the pilgrims were no more than Europeans for the most.. The truth is also that they were mainly murderers and rapers and sons of biatches, that has to be highlighted, but at the end of the day, human being is only human being, no matter the nationality...
So as we say in France, il faut d´ abord faire le menage devant sa porte avant d´ aller voir chez le voisin, and believe me or not, those who criticize the US have just never put a foot outside their village, they are just repeating what they are hearing... Nice little monkey see, monkey do. In a nutshell, I am not pro US way of living, even against it, but I am not blaming the people for that, it is just a different way of apprehending life... The only difference between you guys and us, is that you can take that into derision and laugh about this false image we gave to you, whereas we genuinely think that we are the most intelligent, best lovers and best cook of the world..Oh my, what a shame.. That is why I renounced to my French nationality 10 years ago and I am happily married and living in south America..God bless you all. C'est un peu l'image que vous véhiculez pour le commun des mortels. Mais comme j'ai rencontré pas mal d'américains dans ma vie professionnelle et dans ma vie privée, je peux dire qu'ils y en a beaucoup qui sont ambitieux, super bosseurs et intelligents.

I believe that it is about an inaccurate caricature.
In France we have also today more and more obeses.
The reason is simple : inactivity being added to a badly adapted food. It is true that in France, we tend to eat more vegetables, fruits, fishes and roasted meats.
All that is a question of culture, because if there is the desire, one can eat perfectly balanced in the USA.
It would have to be learned to the children that health by a balanced meal.
As for saying that the Americans are stupid, it is often the television which shows a borrish biker who with his beer tankard to the hand tells coarseness. But in France, we have some too.
Americans lazy ?
I don't believe it because you have a reputation of people who work hard and who have very few holidays.
In France we have at least 5 weeks of holidays per year.

It`s true , it``s the image off the U.S , but I think i`ts stupid to think all the american are like that .
I have 4 friends from the U.S and they are not like that .

En ce qui me concerne, en tant que Nord-Américain vous connaissant infiniment plus que vous ne sauriez vous l'imaginer, c'est tout à fait le cas: l'Étatsunien moyen un un gros abruti paresseux et obèse. C'est exactement comme «nous» vous percevons, et c'est exactement ce que vous êtes.
